Issue 1. Four quick tips to kick-starting your SEO campaign
1. Decide on a Concept
The best place to start is the concept of the dating site you wish to launch. Our account management team should be able to give you a few pointers to what are currently the most successful niches, if you’re short on ideas. Once you have your concept (e.g. Countryside Dating), you can take it forward to the next step of the process… keyword research.
2. Keyword Research
Since search engines and humans alike read words, it makes perfect sense to find out what words not only match your concept but are the types of words people search for. Google Keyword Tool is the best place to begin your research. It’s simple to use, just enter a selection of key phrases that you believe people would use to find your site and submit. The results are a whole host of words and phrases that Google believes match your entered keywords. Many of the words won’t be relevant but the words and key phrases that do match your concept AND have large amounts of search traffic are of the most interest. Make sure you record these keywords as they can be of great use in your PPC campaigns too.
Other tools recently released by Goggle include the ‘Search- based Keyword Tool‘ which is aimed to provide more accurate search estimates based on real traffic.
3. Competitor Analysis
After your keyword research, it is important to look at competitors and see what they are doing well and not so well. A simple Google search will return some top results which is the best place to look since they are obviously doing something right. Although the subject of popularity is outside the scope of this issue, it is the relevance that you should be looking out for. The sites listed at the top are relevant to the keywords you used to search for them with. Check the meta tags (View> Source) and note down what words are used in the <title> & <meta> tags. Remember, this is the text that is used in your search engine listing so make sure it is a precise description of what your site does. This will help improve conversion rates as any user who clicks on this link will expect to see what was described to them. A simple concept but powerful and something you should aim to perfect.
4. Brand/Messaging
You’ll achieve the best conversion results if you can match your descriptive keywords to the identity of your brand. A brand is simply a name underpinned with meaningful words. An example would be Disney, the word does not mean anything itself but is underpinned by the words ‘magic’ and ‘adventure’. List a few keywords that encapsulate your brand. The design of the site, content, and any adverts from this point ideally should adhere to the meaning of these words or make use of them in some way. The whole ethos is to make sure that a referred visitor to your site knows exactly what they are about to see before they get there and to not be disappointed as they’ve found what they were expecting.
In the next issue we will look at the tools you will need to produce content and talk about publishing frequency, building link popularity and using current affairs as a fuel for the viral fire. So make sure you tune in next week!

Competitor Analysis is a great idea and can save you a massive amount of time. If you’re using PPC campaigns, for example, it’s totally worth checking our what your competitors are doing that appears to be working for them, and using it as a platform for your own ideas. Solid post.
I think this is a fantastic post about SEO for dating site, all the stuff Francesca said especially the one about content is fantastic, I think it was Bill Gates that coined a word that is now one of the most important in the SEO business “content is king” the more related contents you get to your site, the better.
Networking with other dating site owners could also be beneficial, you could exchange resources for example. I have been looking for a sort of webmaster forum for dating site owners but it seem non exist at the moment so I created a a sub forum in my webmaster forums for dating site owners, pop in there if you want to move SEO for you site forward: http://www.webmasterserve.com/dating-site-forums/
Looking forward to the subsequent installments of this article.
Well written.
Thanks for the comments, glad you enjoyed reading.
Make sure you tune in next week for more great tips!
I’d also recommend taking a look at signing up for Google Analytics which once integrated into your site (by placing a little bit of script into your web page) means you can find out who has visited your site (demographically) and what words they used to find you.
It’s great to see some emphasis on organic SEO. My efforts have been focussed purely on PPC campaigns which have proved costly. The notion of general website optimisation to try and obtain additional traffic at no cost is something to be welcomed. I would be particularly keen to see how to improve on the number of links that can generate additional traffic and improve rankings in search results at the same time!
Thanks so much for the feedback. Your comments are greatly appreciated.
Look out for More Content = More Cash next week and we will try to answer some of your questions.
Thanks so much
Absolutely spot on advice Francesca. It’s time consuming but time well spent and pays dividends if you stick the formula of fresh content + keywords + meta data.
Organic SEO is definitely a very important part of any successful internet business for obvious reasons - paying for PPC ads = more spend ergo less profit.
The tips above are very good ones. Another useful method I have used in the past is to look at the number of web pages returned in the search results for the search term you are targeting to get an idea of how much competition there is. If you then divide this number by the number of searches from the Google keyword tool you have a figure you can compare to other search terms. The lower the number the better.
Organic SEO is the way to go! PPC costs will continue to rise as more and more competition emerges, but good SEO can actually get completely free traffic.
A great way of building inbound links to your site is to write articles & submit them to article directories. This not only gives you links into your site (80% of Googles ranking is believed to come from quality inbound links), but may even generate some traffic too!
It costs nothing to write & submit articles if you do it yourself
)
I received an e-mail today from Google, telling me about the new ‘Search-based Keyword Tool‘ that you mention here.
I would be wary of using it as I spent 4 hours placing its recommendations into my AdWords account, only to be told that none of my ads were showing as the bids were too low & the landing pages of poor quality for the keyphrases used. This is despite using ALL of the bids amounts & landing pages as advised by the tool!!
I found it to be a complete waste of time myself, if the bid suggestions it makes then need to be doubled before your ads even show!
I could’ve spent that time doing organic SEO!

Thanks for your comments. Yes, we are new to this tool too but I would say that this article tries not to focus on PPC since that is a whole new kettle of fish.
These tools are useful in conjunction with your own practical ’searching’ (actually using the keywords in a search engine) research. With PPC, there is a lot more to consider including negative keywords and working out your CPA (Cost per Aquisition) to name but a few but your comments have highlighted the need for a comprehensive PPC blog.
For SEO, we just want to get a gauge on volume of traffic for certain keywords so we can think about using them in content.
Happy to hear all your comments so please keep them coming
What a great post, SEO is definitely the way forward for Dating websites and webmasters. I very much look forward to more blog posts on the topic. Some great points made by Francesca
there are some good thoughts regarding SEO and content rich websites here. I think concentrating on a niche for the content is a good idea because it drives specific traffic to your site thus saving wasted band width.
In addition less popular niches will mean that the likelihood of seeing higher search engine placement will be better.
There are some great tools out there that do all the hard work for you. For instance you can find out the most popular keywords with the least competition and with searchers that actually buy at the end of the process. Try getting all that information a few years ago, even with an expensive market research company it would have been impossible.
Search engines rank sites based on relevancy – content is King! The search engines realize that the more relevant their listings are, the more people will like their service and use them. Basic!
Hi there,
Great post, I just stumbled upon it and I am already a fan.
