Google’s EU user consent policy – what we’ve done to make sure you’re compliant

Blank 2000 x 2000 (21)

Important update: In light of the challenging circumstances facing many business currently, Google have decided to extend the timeframe to put in a compliant consent mechanism to May 21st 2020.

What has changed?

Under Google’s updated EU user consent policy, you must make certain disclosures to your users in the European Economic Area (EEA) and obtain their consent for the use of cookies or other local storage where legally required, and for the collection, sharing, and use of personal data for ads personalisation.

Last week, partners that were deemed by Google to be outside of their EU user consent policy following the update, received a warning, enforcing that a notice obtaining permissions to use cookies and personalised ads is applied to all pages that collect data – including landing pages.

What we’ve done

Following our recent correspondence on 12th March to advise you of our plans to ensure compliance with Google’s EU user consent policy we have worked behind the scenes to make this as simple and easy for you as possible to comply with.

Before, we advised you would need to insert a JavaScript banner (provided by us) to each of your landing pages. This is no longer the case! If you’re using White Label Dating’s GDPR compliant registration forms you do not need to do anything – we’ve done all the hard work for you!

Next week, we’ll also be updating our cookie policy and privacy policy to ensure full compliance before the deadline of 21st May 2020.

What you need to do

We’ve updated the sign-up script meaning the banner will now appear automatically. Please check all of your landing pages as if there are any issues with the banner not appearing or rendering correctly, it will be deemed as your responsibility by Google and your account may be penalised, so you must let us know as soon as possible.

If you are using a page that collects data and does not use our registration form, for example, a pre-lander, you are required to add the snippet of code to your page manually to ensure this appears.

To add the consent banner to a page that isn’t already using the WLD partner sign up script, add the following snippet (replacing {site_id} with your site ID), just before the closing tag:

We’d like to remind you that you must respond to Google’s ‘Compliance with Google’s EU User Consent Policy’ email as soon as possible to inform them about your compliance approach. Please follow the instructions in this form provided by Google to submit your response.

Please ensure all pages are compliant before submitting your response to Google.

Below is an example of the form.

When completing the form you will need to select the appropriate status: ‘I have now implemented a user consent mechanism or fixed my existing consent mechanism that applies to all my apps and websites. Please re-review my account.’

Once your response has been submitted, Google will re-review and monitor your account.
